Extremely rare and early hand colored engraving on silk. England, ca. 1825. The border contains larger flags of England, America, Holland, Belgium, Spain, and Russia. The border flags are interspersed with excellent detailed vignettes representing sailing ships of the period. The center section contains 144 flags of various nations, with variations on some national flags. We have never seen anything like this piece. There are some small areas where the silk has torn, which are mostly at the edges. All in all the condition is very good. We have had it framed in wooden frame with a nautical rope motif. The proper conservation methods are in place to keep it stable; the silk has been laid down on an acid free board with UV glass to prevent any fading of the colors.
