An especially fine Eight Day Fusee Ship's Clock,
England , circa 1870.
The English 'Fusee Ship's Clock' is one of
the highest quality and most impressive marine timepieces ever produced.
The massive eight day movement of this example completely fills its
bronze case and is a delight to the eye of all those mechanically inclined.
The movement plates are exceptionally heavy as are wheels, pinions,
and other parts of the mechanism. The spiral 'fusee' is precisely designed
and grooved for the fusee chain - a miniature steel 'bicycle' chain
several feet long and composed of individual hand made links less than
1/8" long. The large balance wheel and lever escapement of early
examples, like this one, are placed on the front movement plate behind
the dial.
This clock has an exceptionally heavy bronze case of classic 'ship's
clock' form with massive bezel and nearly 1/2" thick beveled glass
front!
Ths clock is in fine condition, the porcelain dial is in excellent condition with some very light 'hairline' crackle, and original heavy blued steel hands.
The heavy brass case is in excellent condition with crisp moulded edges and lovely golden patina. The old wooden backboard is ready for you to hang this clock on the wall.
This is a rare, exceptional, and most impressive marine antique. Please see more views of this clock by clicking on the photo above.
