This is a most impressive, circa 1830, example of the best in French interpretation of the Greco / Roman architectural portico. This handsome form became popular as a result of Napoleon's conquests in Italy and the great interest in classical philosophies as models for nineteenth century society. Classical forms remained in vogue throughout the nineteenth century as did study of the 'Classics' which spurred on archeological expeditions leading to important discoveries.
The beautiful case is formed of solid and applied alabaster. Please note the carved lion at the top of the case. The case work exhibits fine craftsmanship and attention to detail. The French movement is a top quality 8 day time and strike in fine conditon.
