An especially handsome American Banjo Clock, Rhode Island or Mass., 1815-1825. This fine and original clock retains its ORIGINAL REVERSE PAINTED GLASS PANELS which are in fine condition with some minor paint touch up. The girl with harp motif is a subject seen on a few other period banjo clocks, and we think one of the more attractive original designs. Few early banjo clocks are found with their original glass panels intact.

The very well made mahogany case features some very interesting and seldom encountered details in its light wood string inlay with raised inlaid corner blocks. The integral 'presentation bracket' and matching original 'acorn' top & bottom finials are also a nice touch. We think the case may well have been done by a case maker intending it to harmonize with the inlaid Federal furniture of the period. The case retains fine old - probably original - finish and is in excellent condition. The bottom of the case has never been broken out due to failure of a weight cable.

The original eight day weight driven movemenet is very well made and of typical 1800-1830 Boston design. The movement is in excellent condition and the clock keeps good time. The lead weight appears to be the original one for this clock. The pendulum rod is original. We believe the pendulum bob is replaced. Over the past two hundred year period banjo clock pendulums and weights have often gone missing when the clocks were moved or stored.

The iron dial retains its original painted surface with proper patina and craquelure. The hands are blued steel with age patina.

This is an exceptional original banjo clock for the knowledgeable clock or Federal period furniture collector. This clock is just out of our own collection. We purchased the clock in Massachusetts about 30 years ago.
