This stunning clock was created in France ca. 1825. Its form was inspired by the classic architecture displayed in the porticos of ancient Greece and Rome. French and American art and design of their respective post revolutionary eras allied with the progressive social and political philosophy of the period in lionizing what was considered the best of Greek and Roman civilizations. This resulted in the creation of some beautiful buildings and the furnishings to fill them. 'Classical' French clocks were imported into the United States to grace the mantles of Federal period mansions.

This most impressive clock has a excellent quality 8 day time and strike movement bearing the marks of both 'Pons' ( sent from Paris to saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont by Napoleon's Minister of the Interior to organize the clockmaking industry) and 'Goyerdet', a paris maker, both listed and recognised as top clockmakers of the early 19th century. The dial is gilt chased and engraved retaining the original blued steel hands. The movement is in fine condition.

The beautifully designed case bears cast chased and engraved mountings to compliment the dial. The case retains virtually all its original soft golden ormolu.

This beautiful and impressive clock would be worthy addition to any collection.
