This handsome piece of French origin, circa 1890, is one of a genre of imaginative mantle and desk clocks created in france during the latter half of the nineteenth century with cases in the form of ships, machines, animals, etc. to celebrate discoveries in natural science, and the engineering achievements of the period.
The fine quality eight day movement is housed in a brass mounted 'crystal Ball' case to present both the dial and, on the back, a view of the clock's working balance wheel mechansm to impress the viewer.
The heavy brass elephant is very finely modeled. The French excelled in casting and modeling animals during this period. The elephant is posed atop a circus type brass plinth with trunk and foreleg raised as though presenting the clock to a viewer - a very attractive presentation.
