This is an especially handsome and impressive quarter chiming Tall clock with superb quality three train movement by Elliot of London, ca. 1880 in a beautiful carved mahogany case. This clock is an early example of the best pieces produced as a consequence of the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876. This major event of the late 19th century was responsible for an awakening of appreciation and interest in American Colonial design....and an awakening of interest in the 'Tall Clock' in America. Magnificent clocks, such as this, began to be produced in the 1880s incorporating the best quality movements of the time - produced by Elliot of London - mated with the best American cabinetmakers working from the best Phildelphia Chippendale designs of 1780.
A beautiful 'Broken Arch' pediment, carved quarter columns, and carved paw feet set off the exceptional proportions of the case. Floral garlands grace the hood and a dramatic shell, leaf, and scroll motif carving adorn the base. A heavy beveled glass panel is set in the case door affording one a fine view of the three brass cased weights (the heaviest is 35 lbs.) and massive brass 7 steel pendulum. This feature goes well with the very impressive brass dial fitted with raised spandrelsmsilvered chapter ring, and hand painted 'Moon' dial.
The superbly designed and built three train movement strikes Westminster Chimes on four massive gongs, with the hours striking on a fifth gong. The movemnt is a work of art in itself and we have photographed the clock inside and out. Please take the time to see all the subsequent pages of photos by clicking on the top left photo above.
The movement is in fine condition and the gong strike quite pleasant. the case is in fine condition with excellent color and original finish. This clock was originally built to exemplify the best in 19th century machine design and cabinetry - it was intended to impress when it was built and it still does.
