A floor standing American Jeweler's Regulator clock is a rarity considered one of the icons of American clock collecting. This fine example was made by the New Haven Clock Co., ca. 1890. Jewler's regulator clocks were built by major clock manufacturers on special order only for clock and watchmaking establishments and jewlers who sold and serviced clocks. They were the accurate master timepieces used to regulate all other clocks and watches on the premises. The Jewelers Regulator was built with the most precision timepiece movement available at the time - generally using a weight driven 'dead beat' escapement. The majority of jeweler's regulators were wall mounted timepieces. Floor standing regulators were considerably more expensive than wall regulators at the time and consequently fewer were built which results in their being considered a considerable rarity today. This fine floor standing regulator was built by the New Haven Clock Company, circa 1890. The movement is a completely American designed and built weight driven timepiece with dead beat escapement and stop-works intended to be as precision a machine as possible. The movement being American is a rare and desirable feature of this piece since numbers of Jeweler's Regulators commissioned by American establishments in the period utilized European 'Pin Wheel' escapement movements. This regulator also has en embossed silvered dial featuring 'Center Seconds' . The handsome case was built of American walnut following 'Eastlake' designs which were very fashionable in Victorian America. The craftsmanship is of the highest order and the case retains its original varnish finish. This fine regulator was built for a jewelry/clock store in Fall River, Mass. where it stood, faithfully keeping time for many years until the store ceased operation. The regulator remained in the family of the store owners until recently. This impressive Jeweler's Regulator is in fine original condition and a prime example of this rare type.
