Exceptional French Porcelain cased Mantle Clock in rare Moorish / Saracenic achitectural form, ca. 1880.

This is the only example of a clock in the form of a mosque we have ever encountered. The polychrome porcelain case is beautifully proportioned with excellent detail including a veiled female figure on the steps!

The movement is eight day time and bell strike of the best quality by Japy. The Arabesque dial is ormolu mounted and of complex double-sunk construction. The clock retains its original blued steel hands.

This handsome clock is in excellent condition. There are two minor chips on the top edge of the "roof" gallery, and a minor age crack on the left side of the case.

This is a unique and fascinating example of 19th century 'Romantic' design inspired by the 'Turkish Revival' movement of the period.
