This is a fine example of the handsome and eminently collectible Waltham ,'Lever Escapement Chronometer' as it was described by the world famous Waltham Watch Company of Waltham, Mass. USA. This particular deck watch has its outer mahogany box, which is very scarce, and the additional collectiblity of being US Navy marked.
These mahogany cased precision instruments were carried aboard ships, naval vessels, and private yachts. Prior to the advent of radio direction finding, a navigator equipped with one, would use this piece to determine his longitude at sea. What today is prized as a beautiful collector's item was originally an instrument people depended upon for their lives.
This fine 'Deckwatch', as these instruments have come to be called, has the finest quality fifteen jewel movement adjusted to varying positions, and also has an 'up/down' indicator - a device to let one know if the piece needs winding. These instruments could never be allowed to run down at sea with lives depending on them. The 'Waltham Lever Escapement Chronometer' was produced from 1908 until the eve of World War Two. This is an early example made in 1918 (according to its serial number) in fine condition with original dial surface and blued steel hands.
The movement is mounted in gimbals the purpopse of which is to keep the timepiece level despite the roll and pitch of the vessel carrying it. The handsome case is brass mounted mahogany with upper lid for viewing and middle opening for winding the instrument. The case has excellent color and original finish.
This Waltham is in fine original condition making it a prime collector's piece. Please click on the photo above for more detail photos of this clock.
