This is a 'Best-Of-Type' early China Trade period aromatic camphor wood campaign chest with desk fitted upper drawer carved mouldings, and ebony inlay made in Canton, China circa 1830.

In terms of camphor wood grain figure, richness of color, and original surface this chest cannot be improved upon and would be most difficult to equal.

The China Trade Campaign Chest was a specialized piece of furniture believed to have originated in England late in the 18th century for the use of naval and military officers aboard ship and on duty in remote areas of the World. Some of the best and most interesting examples were built in Canton (and later Shanghai ), China of exotic Asian hardwoods and utilizing the superb craftsmanship of expert Chinese cabinetmakers who fitted these heavy pieces together with beautifully cut mortise and tennon and mitred dovetail joints. China Trade voyages could last well over a year and those in the 'Trade' often had to endure difficult climates and situations.

Ship masters and officers required the best cabin furnishings available. Limited space in ship's cabins resulted in the top drawers of many chests being fitted out for a desk so that a single piece might serve a dual function. Camphor wood was prized for chests because the wood contains a pleasant aromatic substance that gives it a 'camphor' smell, which cannot be seen or felt but in the heavily insect infested southern latitudes acts as a natural insect repellent to protect whatever the chest contains.

This chest is a beautiful example of an early stage in the evolution of the Campaign Chest in that the solid case is built with a moulded carved top, carved drawer dividers, and carved corner mouldings with ebony inlay. The case has evolved into a two part form so that it may be carried below decks via narrow companionways into ship's cabins. The feet have evolved into the strong 'bunn' form, and special brasses have been developed that lay flush with the wood surface. By the 1840s the lovely carving and overhanging top of this example will have been abandoned for flush top designs with brass reinforcing pieces at joints and corners - defensive measures due to very rough conditions encountered at sea.

The desk, or secretary, section of this chest is very well laid out with one drawer fitted for pens and retaining its original inkwell/sander set. Compartment dividers are nicely carved and the layout is practical.

This exceptional chest is the most beautiful and impressive example of camphorwood we have encountered and would have been a 'Special Order' piece when built. It is in fine condition with superb color and original surface. It is a beautiful and historic antique that has been especiallly well cared for.
