This beautiful profusely marquetry inlaid, American china cabinet dates from 1890 - 1900.
The Philadelphia Centennial celebration of 1876 led to a rediscovery by the American public of our Colonial and early Federal furniture designs and a desire to have similar pieces in their homes.
This piece following Chippendale and Adams designs is an example of the best of its period in terms of visual appeal and quality of cabinetry. The finely proportioned mahogany cabinet is inlaid with contrasting light color woods that have also been colored red and green and incised to show a profusion of floral and foliate designs reminiscent of the late eighteenth designs of Angelica Kaufman. We believe this impressive hand made piece to be American; construction methods, dovetail design and the extensive use of poplar for internal secondary wood indicates construction by the best cabinet makers of New York City, or Philadelphia.
The cabinet is in excellent condition with original finish and no loss of inlay. The lower sides have had professional restoration to close a minor age crack on either side. This beautiful cabinet has been loved and preserved for generations. Please see all photos. Please email with any questions.
