This is a much better example of a pre WW-I dated Mauser GEW-98 than is usually encountered. This rifle was made at Spandau Arsenal and is dated 1912.
This rifle is in especially fine original condition. Serial numbers on receiver, barrel, bolt (three numbers on bolt with two arsenal marked out), and stock match. Trigger guard, floorplate, bbl. bands, and buttplate do not match the rest.
Early examples of the famous GEW-98 saw very hard usage throughout WW-I and in the German Colonies in Africa and the Pacific where re-supply was impossible due to British control of the seas. Servicable rifles were kept in the best shape possible through refitting of parts at arsenals and field repair stations.
This fine GEW-98 retains 90% original blue on its barrel, and rear sight is also fine. The bore is dark and uncleaned but shows very sharp rifling and should clean well. The receiver retains its original 'in-the-white' finish with some age spots and patina showing no evidence that it was ever re-polished. The bolt is in similar condition. The trigger guard and bbl. bands retain 70%+ original blue with some solidified grease and patina. The buttplate appears to have been finished 'in-the-white' and has a nice natural steel patina. The cleaning rod and bayonet lug are in similar condition. The walnut stock and handguard are in fine original uncleaned condition with inspector marks, original finish, and lighter handling marks than one would expect on a rifle of this vintage. The regimental disk is stamped, '12. R. 4. 28.' + proof mark. There are no import marks.
All in all this early GEW-98 is a scarce Imperial German Military rifle in this untouched as issued condition with far more original finish than is generally found on a rifle of this period.
This rifle is offered as a collector's item and anyone contemplating shooting such a weapon should have it checked out for safety by a professional gunsmith before firing.
