A fine heavy bronze barrel American salute/signal cannon of the period 1860 - 1880. This good looking finely made cannon is a fine example of the type of cannon mounted on yachts and small vessels which were used for a number of important purposes from starting races, saluting other vessels, to signaling distress at sea.

This especially interesting example features a heavy bronze barrel of mid-nineteenth century naval cannon form, with percussion cap ignition which insures proper firing in any weather. The barrel is strongly mounted on a well designed oak carriage, with bronze and iron fittings, which in turn is mounted upon an oak slide. The front of the slide has a 'stop block' with bronze sheaved hole for mounting on a vessel so the cannon might be swiveled for aiming. The rear of the slide has a sturdy block to stop the cannon's recoil when it was fired. This gun carriage and recoil slide design was based on Civil War period USN 'Boat Guns' and is seldom encountered on signal cannon.

This fine looking cannon is in excellent condition. the bronze barrel has lovely age patina, and the carriage and slide have fine color and old varnish finish. This cannon has been well cared for over the last one hundred fifty years.

As a point of interest this cannon was loaded with a charge of black powder and three old felt wads when we aquired it! It is not loaded now and we do not suggest firing antique cannon of this type. This handsome and interesting cannon would be a fine piece for the collector of marine antiques and would display nicely on a desk or shelf.
