A magnificent vintage working model of a 'Robert Stephenson & Co. Ltd.', Darlington, England double expansion marine steam engine with condenser and self feathering paddlewheels! This most impressive - and to us sculptural - model is constructed of brass and steel with some aluminum castings. Each side of the frame bears the nameplate 'Robert Stephenson & Co. Ltd., No.3893, Darlinton 1925'. The model displays an exceptional level of craftsmanship with operating high & low pressure cylinders, wheel operated full reversing gear, and condenser with pump. In addition both paddlewheels have operating mechanical 'feathering' of the paddle blades which on an actual vessel maximized their efficiency. The model depicts the actual layout of a Stephenson engine aboard ship with its base configured to form the engine braces within the ship's hull. Robert Stephenson is credited with developing the steam powered locomotive in England in the early nineteenth century. By mid century his company was building locomotives, and steamship engines for use throughout the entire British Empire. The engine modeled here could have been found on a British paddle steamer, or tug.....and on river, lake, or coastal steam vessels plying the Nile, Congo, or Yangtsze rivers in addition to steaming the South China Seas. We believe this tour-de-force model was specially built by a highly skilled machinist/engineer as a presentation piece, or, to demonstrate the attributes of Stephenson engines to perspective clients for the full sized engine. The model is in fine condition; all rods and pistons function well as do the reversing gear and condenser pump. The model frame retains its original paint and working parts have an attractive age patina. This beautiful and very impressive model is one of the most interesting pieces we have owned over the last twenty-eight years. It could occupy a prime place in a nautical and/or steam engine collection....or be pridefully displayed by anyone appreciative of the sculptural beauty of antique machinery.
