This is an very fine example of the most advanced variation of the famous Seth Thomas Outside Bell Ships Clock with brass case & brass back plate. The Seth Thomas - Outside Bell is considered the 'Classic' American ship's clock. The 'Outside Bell' model was developed in the 1870s and continued in production through the 1920s. During production various improvements were made resulting in several variations for the collector. Few of these true working ship's clocks have survived in the fine condition of this example.

These very handsome clocks strike 'Ship's Bells' through a double strike system marking off the series of four hour 'watches' that make up the sailor's day. Each four hour watch is divided into half hour periods tolled off from one through eight bells. These clocks were intended to be hung on the bulkheads of ship's pilot houses, captain's cabins, etc., and could be found in vessels ranging from the most luxurious yachts to battleships......from the coast of Maine to the China seas.

This particular clock was fitted with a Chinese brass bell which bears Chinese designs on its inner surface. This bell is the same size as a Seth Thomas bell but rings with a deeper tone. We believe this bell was mounted early in the clock's working life, probably by a China Seas captain who prefered its tone. Many American steamships plied the Pacific and worked on the China Coast....also traveled the Yangtsze river from Shanghai to its head of navigation at Chungking. The period 1900 to 1941 was a romantic and dangerous time in that part of the world and we would like to think this clock is an artifact of that period.

While one of the most decorative ship's clocks ever designed, the Seth Thomas 'Outside Bell' was intended for real work. Consequently, relatively few have survived the effects of rough usage, years at sea, and salt water corrosion. The clock is in fine mechanical condition with especially pleasing bell tone. The brass has a lovely patina, the original silvered dial is in fine condition, and the clock retains its original blued steel hands....this clock was well cared for.

This clock is mounted on an old wooden black laquered backboard ready for display in the home or use at sea.....a great looking collector's clock with exceptional charm . Seth Thomas 'Outside Bell' clocks can often run for two days but should be wound every day for best accuracy.
