Who we are

Before there was an A & A Gaines Antiques there was Alan Gaines,
the etching artist.

A & A Gaines Antiques has been in business since 1980. Originally a brick and mortar store on Franklin Street in the heart of downtown Newport RI. In November 2014 A & A Gaines Antiques moved online.

We (Alan and Amy Gaines) carry a select line of nautical antiques, antique firearms, clocks, furniture, art, silver, jewelry, Asian antiques, and Western Americana along with many unique accessories.

The Art of Alan Jay Gaines

Before there was an A & A Gaines Antiques there was Alan Gaines, the etching artist. Below are a few examples of his work including a bio page from a catalog of his work ca. 1978.

Alan’s work reflected his interests in ships, history, the old west, and railroad trains. He used the etching technique with aquatint to soften his precise linear style. In his later work he also used lithography to add a limited color palette to his black and white art work.
